Valentine’s Day without the pricetag

It’s Valentine’s Day so for those of you who indulge rather than shun, here are some budget friendly ideas for romancing your loved one.

Takeout picnics:

Up Mt Eden:

Either Barilla dumplings, something middle eastern from Shefco Cedar Bakery or Kebab Stop or Mt Eden Fish Shop for fish and chips or fish burger,

One Tree Hill (check closing times):

Epolitos pizza and a bottle of wine in Cornwall Park

Takapuna Beach:

Anything from the divine Fatimas Takapuna would be perfect for a romantic evening for two.

Can’t beat the setting sun at Muriwai with a Dantes Pizza from Huapai.

Oneroa Beach (Waiheke):

Dragonfired on Oneroa beach for pizzas, mexican bread pockets and polenta plates.

Waterfront/Tamaki Drive:

Vietnamese takeout from Saigonz on a picnic bench or at Okahu Bay. Or Duck on rice from the little stall in Tai Ping Asian Supermarket

Mission Bay:

Fish and chips from Fish Pot Cafe on the beach or in the park by the fountain or if that’s too heavy, maybe something from Otto Woo?

If you’d prefer to put a picnic together yourself. Try Nosh or Farro Fresh for gourmet treats, or delis such as The Essential Deli in Mt Eden, Chateau Briant  (formerly known as Pyrenees) in Devonport or Pyrenees in Mt Albert. Head to the Domain, One Tree Hill, Mt Eden or the Parnell Rose Gardens/Judges Bay with your purchases. Downtown foodie romantics should check out the Smith and Caughey’s Food Hall on the top floor and then head over to Albert Park.

If the object of your affections has a sweet tooth, take then for an Italian Denso at The Chocolate Boutique in Parnell, dessert at Fraser’s Cafe in Mt Eden or artisan Gelato from Giapo’s on Queen Street

Have a lovely day
