Try It Out Vietnamese Restaurant

Try It Out Vietnamese Restaurant might turn some people away. Don’t be put off by the name. Don’t be put off by the decor.

Don’t be put off by the fact that it looks much like it did in its previous life as a sports bar. Try it out – literally! Actually the name is probably apt. The underlying message being “Try It Out” even though it doesn’t look like much..

My husband and I ventured out to Otahuhu on the recommendation of a Vietnamese nail technician (I know) and we’re glad we did. Since our trip to Vietnam two years ago we’ve been looking for authentic places and have found them few and far between.

Try it Out is the real deal. We had Steamed Prawn Rolls, which had pork in them too ($5), the Vietnamese Pancake ($13) the Prawn Salad with pickled Lotus ($15) and the Grilled Chicken with Lemongrass ($13.50).

The Lemongrass Chicken was the best I’ve had in New Zealand. The Vietnamese Pancake tasted exactly as it did in Hoi An at the cook school I visited (it’s a savoury crêpe-type pancake made out of rice flour pan-fried and stuffed with slivers of pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts. It comes with lettuce for wrapping and dipping in the traditional sauce)

The Prawn Salad with Lotus was a taste explosion. My husband loved the strong pickled flavours and so did I but in the end I found it a bit much in such a generous serving. It would be a good dish to share with a lot of people rather than just two people as it could become overwhelming.

The service was good and prompt (although it was early on a Sunday evening so imagine it gets a lot busier than it was) and the owner was very friendly. We did note the large amount of highchairs and thought it could be a good place to come back with the kids and plough through more of the menu.

We will definitely be back to Try More Out.
