The Street Social House is a wonderful collection of modern, flavourful food in the heart of Waikiki Beach, Honolulu.  BBQ, Italian, Poke, Maui Onion Burger, Ramen, Healthful and refreshments of all kinds are all to be found in this food collective just off Kalakaua Avenue.  A welcome cheapeats option to the “all you can eat” tourist food buffets.

My first reaction when I was told that The Street is located in the old International Market Place was one of disbelief.  How could anything worth a foodie visit be located there?  Well, the old Market Place is no more, replaced now by trendy international retail brands.  At the back of the space is The Street, which has much in common with a mall food court as the new retail space has with the old Market Place.  In other words, this is a food collective worth a visit.

When we walked in, we took in the buzzy vibe and explored the offerings.  Everything to suit the trendy foodie and cocktail-lover is here.  We noticed that the International Smoke stand was doing a brisk trade, so off we went. Touted as being “The lighter side of BBQ”, it is a creation of American celebrity chef Ayesha Curry.

Our family loves ribs, and the St Louis-Style BBQ Pork Ribs ($15.99/plate) called to us.  With this we opted for accompaniments of papaya slaw and “Burnt Ends” BBQ Mac n Cheese.  This was a delicious meal, with the meat full of a rich smoky flavour, the mac n cheese creamy and cheesy and the papaya slaw (with green apple, cabbage and jalapeño) a fresh, tart counterpoint to the rich food.

Unfortunately this rich meal meant that we just could not try out any dessert offerings available, and we stuck to water to drink, despite a cheerful server bringing around a tempting refreshment cart.

The Street caters to a wide range of clientele:  adults, families, tourists and I suspect, even locals.  Put this on your “to visit” list should you escape a NZ winter for Honolulu’s sunny shores.  Aloha!
