The Loaded Dog
I’ve been told that there is nothing more American than a hot dog and if you’re looking for a hot dog, The Loaded Dog is the place to go.
The Loaded Dog isn’t a bells and whistles place, it’s a little shop that brings that Steak n Shake feel to New Zealand. My friends and I were looking for a cheap place for lunch on the Shore that was good and not too healthy. I’ve heard about The Loaded Dog for a year or so and decided it was about time to try it.
The little white and red checkered restaurant is nestled in the Winsor Park strip on East Coast Bays Road alongside Burgerfuel and Chao Phraya. I don’t recommend going to Loaded Dog hungry because you will want, and most likely order, everything. My mouth was salivating after just reading their loaded fries options.
I got the bacon dog ($9.50) which is loaded with Thousand Island dressing, heaps of onions mushrooms and cheese. My two friends both got the breakfast dog ($9.50) which has bacon, hashbrowns, eggs, grilled onions and relish. I also ordered the chili and cheese fries ($7.50) and the milk and cookies loaded shake ($7.90). One friend ordered his own chili cheese fries and the other got the jalapeño poppers ($5.50).
The ladies working on the day were friendly and very chill. Most people seem to get takeaways, a few came and went as we waited, but I would hang out and chill at the restaurant. There’s heaps of space and if you eat in and there is less of a chance that your loaded fries will get soggy.
The food came out quick and it was all so massive! If you’re hungry, one loaded dog would be plenty. If you’re starving, I would get one loaded dog and share a loaded fry with your mate.
The loaded dogs are slightly difficult to eat, but that is expected. I had to use a knife and fork half way through. And the Breakfast dog was a meal in itself! The jalapeño poppers were okay, but small for their price, I wouldn’t order them again.
However, their milk and cookies thick shake was fantastic! Almost as good as Chick-fil-A’s in the States, which are my ultimate favourite shakes, hands down. If the shake had chunks of cookie bits in it then I would have givin it a ten out of ten!
But honestly, the chili cheese fries might have been my favourite out of the lot. Good heat in the the chili, the right ratio of toppings to fries, and the fries were thin and crispy.
If you are looking for some good, decently priced American food on the Shore, I would highly recommend The Loaded Dog. I’m still dreaming about their chili cheese fries…
