The Brewers Co-operative

Being married to craft beer nerd means checking out a lot of brew pubs and I was pleased to see this one had food within our Cheap Eats Budget. The Brewers Co-operative has 20 taps with revolving brands and types of beer so the husband was pleased and I loved the idea of a short, seafood heavy menu served in newsprint rather than on plates.

The interior is fun, with a slightly industrial blokey feel complete with a 1950s wall covered with clippings from that year. It’s an airy space perfect for a summer Friday night beer and something to eat. We ordered the Garlic Chardonnay and Herb reduction Mussel pot ($12.50), the Salt and Pepper Squid ($12.50) and the Craft Beer Batter Fish with Chips ($12.50) and it was plenty for us.

The squid was the highlight. Perfect balance of outside crispness and inner tenderness with a nice balsamic reduction to offset it. It was served with rocket and aioli. I was slightly apprehensive of the fish when it came out as it looked really overdone, but I was proved wrong. It was perfectly cooked but next time I’d probably ask them to ease up a bit on the salt.

The mussels were pretty standard and the fries were great. All up we were pretty pleased. There was also a serve your own salad bar but I think I’d rather go back and try that for lunch. At 6pm on a Friday night, some of the salads looked a bit tired.

I think the Brewers Co-op is a great addition to our lovely city. Get down there for a cheeky Epic, Good George, Garage Project or Liberty Beer, just to name a few. There’s something very fun about eating out of a paper package, it’s not just for sitting at the beach with the kids.
