The Blue Bird Vegetarian Cafe

I have been coming to this calm oasis for a number of years.  It is run by members of the Sri Chinmoy Centre, a spiritual and meditation organisation.  You will receive a warm welcome by the always-smiling staff as you enter the café.  The décor follows the theme of the bluebird which is considered a reflection of the soul.

The food is as nourishing as the environment.  You can choose between the daily cabinet offerings or the regular “bowl” menu.  I usually opt for one of the daily cabinet specials, so this time I tried the Moroccan lentils bowl (small $10).  You have the choice of having it on brown rice, mashed potatoes or kumara and I opted for kumara. Even the small bowl is a generous serving, perfect for lunch.  It comes with a slice of grain bread and butter.

The lentils had the warmth of the Middle Eastern spice blend of cumin and coriander.  It was described as being served with green beans, but it included fresh beans, broccoli and cauliflower. The sweetness of the kumara complimented the spices perfectly.  I washed this down with a freshly squeezed carrot juice with a shot of ginger.

My friend had the small bowl of dhal also on kumara ($10), and even managed to eat the very large but utterly decadent chocolate fudge ball ($4.50 – think oversized chocolate truffle).

Some of the other bowl options were Tropical Chickpeas, Hungarian “Stroganoff” and Mexican Beans. The Bluebird Café does cakes like no other café…luscious layer cakes (all vegan $5.50) to tempt anyone with even a tiny sweet tooth.  There are also rich slices… the selection varies daily.

There are two seating areas to choose from: downstairs and up the steep wooden staircase behind the serving counter.  Make the trek upstairs to relax in a lounge-like atmosphere. You will return to the bustling world outside having had a true “refreshment break”.
