Thanya Thai Restaurant (formerly Jungle Flavor)

Thanya Thai restaurant is the new name given by the new owners of the Thai restaurant formerly known as Jungle Flavor.  The first time we ate food from Thanya Thai for this review, I forgot to take a photo, so there was nothing to do but go and enjoy their food again.  And it was no hardship – the new owners state that they want to offer “top-notch” Thai cuisine.

The restaurant has a simple but pleasant decor and seats 50 people, but we chose to order food to takeaway to eat at home.  Most of the food items on the takeaway menu are under the $20 Cheapeats mark, except for several seafood dishes.  We have tried the Panang Curry ($15.50), Jungle Curry ($15.50),  Pad Krapao stir fry ($15.50), Larb ($15.50), Pad Nam Man Hoi stir fry ($15.50), Jungle Phad Thai ($14.50) and Jungle Fried Rice with prawns ($16.50).

The curries and stir fries have been very good and often come with carved vegetables or other garnishes – a nice touch for takeaways .  The Panang Curry lived up to its description of chicken in a creamy red thick panang curry sauce with coconut cream, seasonal vegetables, peanuts and lime leaves.  The pieces of breast meat were tender and the sauce rich and flavoursome.  Anything with coconut cream is a winner in my book.

The Jungle Curry is made without coconut cream and depends for flavour on spices and herbs.  This dish had less flavour than I expected and I would opt for the other curry dishes, given a choice.

Although both stir fries were good, the Pad Krapao stir fry was light on the featured green beans and sweet basil and I preferred the Pad Nam Man Hoi with beef, vegetables, mushroom in oyster sauce. Again, both dishes came with attractive garnishes.

My favourite dish is the Larb (as shown in the photo). I ordered it both times and really enjoy the minced chicken with mint, red onion, spring onion, roasted ground rice and coriander.  It presses all the right buttons for me – packed with flavour with a hit of spice and very little greasiness. In fact, most of the dishes were made with a very light touch of cooking oil.

I think that the Phad Thai suffered from being squashed in a takeaway container.  The noodles had stuck together and it needed a squeeze of lime juice to freshen the flavour.  The Fried Rice is likewise a standard dish and really unnecessary – each main dish comes with complimentary steamed rice.

If you live in the Balmoral/Mount Eden area, I suggest that you try Thanya Thai for yourself.  And perhaps like me you will find yourself going back for seconds!

Good review, although Top Ten Thai around the corner is cheaper, has more generous portion sizes, friendlier service, and TASTES better. Especially their Panang Curry.

Thanks for that tip! I loved the Panang Curry at Thanya so will look forward to trying out Top Ten’s.

I love Thanya! I swear this is the best thai food I have had in AKL. The Garri Puffs are bang on and the Chicken & Cashew Nut stir Fry is to die for! This place is better than “Top Ten Thai” which is around the corner. (I have only had Takeaways from Thanya) – yet to have dined in there. Every thai food fan must try this place!
