Thai Yum Food Hut

Have we discovered the best Thai food on the North Shore?  Quite possibly.

Fate was smiling on us when we bumped into a friend in Birkenhead and asked her where to go for lunch. She pointed us in the direction of Thai Yum. “It’s small but has great food”. She was so right.

It was a good thing we were told that the restaurant was a couple of doors down from the Westpac bank or we might have missed it. The sparkling clean restaurant/takeaway bar is simply decorated, but as the saying goes “the food’s the thing” here.

We opted to share the Choo Chee Goong (stir-fried prawns with red curry paste, kaffir lime leaves, peas and coconut cream $13.90) and the Thai Hot Basil (stir-fried chicken with chilli, basil leaves and vegetables $10.90).

While we were waiting, two young men ordered and sat at the table next to us. Since there are only two tables in the restaurant, we started chatting with them. They both ate out every day and Thai Yum was a regular haunt.

But back to our lunch. This was one of the most beautifully presented Cheapeats meals that we have had. The Thai Hot Basil dish even came decorated with a carved carrot flower! The flavour of the sauce in the stir-fry was both sweet and savoury and we ate every morsel. The prawn dish was also delicious, in a rich coconut and curry sauce, with green beans instead of peas.

The fellows at the table next to us had a stir-fried beef dish and insisted on us trying the home-made curry puffs ($6.90). These had a light, crisp pastry around the spicy chicken and potato filling.

Next time I would try one of the Thai salads ($10.90) or the 5 Star Chicken ($10.90). For a real splash-out, the whole deep-fried snapper costs $17.90.

With prices as reasonable as these, and with food so flavourful, Thai Yum deserves to be on your ‘must try’ Cheapeats list.

Thai Yum in Birkenhead is lovely food great value … However the best Thai / Asian food on the shore is definitely ‘ Asian Wok ‘ in browns bay ! The supreme king on the shore ! Super fresh ingredients, big plates, incredible flavours and 2 people can eat like royalty for around 30 including drinks ! You should check them out !

Just finished reading the Metro Magazine Top 100 cheap eats and saw Thai Yum Thai restaurant in there so I thought I would go along and try it out. Wow the reports where correct , I had a starter of spring rolls and a Phad Thai as a main both of them great flavour and good size portion in fact had to take some of my Phad Thai home . Great service with many smiles and great food .

We agree Brittany. The food and the service at Thai Yum is excellent. Even the simple decor is lovely. It was one of our earlier “finds” on the North Shore:

We gave it a big “thumbs up” in the Metro judging. Let us know what you think of any other places that you check out on the Metro list.

This place was a regular of ours for most of last year (2012) but unfortunately we returned to order our favourite Thai beef salad and they must have changed owners and the quality had slipped ALOT. Our salads were basically all meat with a bit of onion and no vegetables whatsoever. A bit disappointed as it was a staple Friday night takeaway and now we have to find another one. 🙁
