Thai Street

We’ve been meaning to check out Thai Street for a while as it always looks busy and bustling when we pass it. This night was no exception with a steady stream of locals and tourists chatting loudly in the lively, open-fronted restaurant.

It’s part of the Wynyard Quarter group of restaurants and after sampling their fare, one we would happily go back to.

We ordered the Moo Yang – a thai BBQ dish of grilled pork scotch with a side of slaw, Som Tam salad and sticky rice ($18.50). It was great. Nicely-cooked smokey flavoured pork (not dry as I feared) a vibrant Som Tam made with actual green papaya rather than the carrot version you often see here, and a pleasant-but-nothing-special slaw on the side. The Som Tam had all the requisite variations in texture and flavour and we quite liked the fact it didn’t blow your head off. It meant you could add chilli from the condiments on the table to your liking.

We also ordered the Emerald Duck, stir fried with seasonal greens and mixed spices ($19.50). While not as showy as the Moo Yang, it was really tasty in its simplicity. Tender duck stir fried with bok choy, brocolli, celery and a few mushrooms. All perfectly cooked veggies, neither too raw or mushy.

We are very keen to return and try the delicious-sounding roasted duck and tamarind relish fresh spring rolls. I was so disappointed they had run out – clearly I wasn’t the only one who thought they sounded fab.

Definitely go and check out the Isaan delights at Thai Street. We’ll be back for sure.
