Cheap Eats - Thai Cuisine, Mt Albert

Thai Cuisine

Upon searching by ethnicity on the site, we found ourselves sadly lacking in Thai restaurants so this week we’re starting to remedy that (such an arduous task!)

We decided to check out Thai Cuisine in New North Road as a few people had told us they like to frequent it. My husband says it looked a bit like a hair salon and the bright orange interior certainly gave it a point of difference. It’s not going to win awards for decor, but I’ve seen much worse and at least it was clean and ‘cheerful’.

We were a bit overwhelmed by choice and you can either look at the printed menu or a handy photo album (yes an actual photo album) of the dishes. Everything looked fantastic but we finally decided on the Steamed whole snapper ($13.50), the prawns with sweet chilli paste, cashew nuts and vegetables ($13.50) and the Stir Fried tofu with vegetables, fresh chilli and basil leaves ($8).

They were all excellent. Only the prawns were slightly too sweet for me – user error for ordering something with sweet chilli paste really. The fish was probably the standout, steamed to perfection and filled the air with the most gorgeous lemon scent as it was brought out. The simple combination of chilli and lemon juice was clean and fresh and coupled with the delicate texture, made for a wonderful mouth experience. It was also a steal at the price! The tofu had a good kick and that wonderful thai fish sauce/brown sugar/lime/soy flavour. The vegetables were firm, neither too crunchy or soggy.

We are suckers for a good thai dessert and this one didn’t disappoint. The description of rice flour, glutinous flour, coconut milk, sugar and salt on the menu certainly didn’t do these six little coconut delights justice. They were tiny light, steamed puddings made from the above ingredients set in individual pottery moulds and had the most warming, comforting sweet, coconut milky flavour. At six dollars they were ridiculously cheap and the perfect end to a lovely meal.

We’d love to go back and try some of the deep fried snapper dishes, their large array of cold salads or the ‘Evil Jungle Prince’ curry. We noticed a bit late that they did sticky rice too, a huge favourite. They had all the usual suspects but there were definitely a few non-standard regional specialties in there that would be interesting to try too. We look forward to further browsing of the photo album…

Chill Out in the Mt Albert shops (across the road from Thai Cuisine and down by the TAB) also has decent Thai food. Worth a visit!
