Takeaways – Mt Eden Village Fish Shop
We last reviewed the award-winning Mt Eden Village Fish Shop as part of a Rugby World Cup round-up in 2011. We thought it was past time to revisit this popular takeaway and give it an updated review of its own.
One of the wonderful attractions of Mt Eden Village is the many long-serving quality food suppliers. For example, K C Loo fruit and vegetable shop has been in the village since 1947. There has been a fish shop at the location of Mt Eden Village Fish Shop for over 80 years. The current owners, Hossein Khosravi and his wife, proudly continue the tradition of supplying quality wet fish and outstanding fish and chips.
One of the great things about the shop is that they offer not only fish with a crunchy beer batter coating, but also crumbed and grilled fish. Snapper, tarakihi and gurnard (my personal favourite fish) are all offered plus wet fish from the window.
Not only is the fish perfectly cooked, but the fries are golden and crunchy. To my mind, the best way to enjoy their fish and chips is right in the shop, sitting at the window table and bench, munching the crispy hot food and watching the world go by. The tomato sauce and malt vinegar are complimentary at the table and there are soft drinks available for purchase.
I also love the fish burger ($13) and fish wrap ($12). In an effort to cut down on the carbs, I ordered the fish wrap. A large crumbed fillet with salad was enclosed in the wrap, which had been lightly toasted. A perfect and satisfying lunch.
You can also order mussels, calamari pieces, oysters, prawns and scallops ($2-$4.50 ea), and of course potato chips ($6 full scoop/$4 half scoop) and kumara chips ($8 full scoop/$4.50 half).
For something different, try their hot salmon samosa as a snack, or for a gourmet treat, buy a little pottle of their homemade smoked salmon pate ($5) to enjoy with some artisan french bread from Olaf’s bakery around the corner. Hossein smokes the fish himself in the smokehouse behind the shop.
School children are in for a treat, too. Pick up a cone of battered fish and chips for only $5 between 3 and 5 pm.
You can order in person, on the phone or on-line, and they also cater to large groups.
Whether you eat in at the window table or take your warm parcel of food and take in the view on the top of Mt Eden, you will have the best of our iconic takeaway food to enjoy.
BTW, we devoured most of the fish before the photo was taken! Proof of how good it was!
