Located at the south end of the Asian restaurant strip on Dominion Road, Stumpy’s has a loyal following for its thin-crust, wood-fired pizzas.
Returning from a weekend away, a Sunday night seemed the perfect opportunity to try their offerings. We must have hit a quiet night, because when we phoned in our pick-up order, we were told the pizzas would be ready in 10-15 minutes. And they were.
Stumpy’s (mostly) keeps to simple, authentic toppings, and they have a range of pizzas with buffalo mozzarella. Hawaiian, chicken and salmon topped pizzas are on the regular menu, but we skimmed over those and opted for the more traditional styles.
We ordered two small (10 inch) pizzas: Pepperoni ($12) and a Veg Out ($16). What we got by mistake were a Prosciutto ($17) and a Veg Out. We had been looking forward to the spicy Pepperoni pizza, so the mild Prosciutto was not what our tastebuds were hankering after. We did get a spicy hit from the fresh rocket that topped it. The Veg Out was an excellent combination of veggies including artichoke hearts, roasted capsicum, onion, mushrooms and capers. Both of the pizzas are from the Buffalo Range.
The thin, wood-fired crust is the real winner at Stumpy’s. They even offer a gluten-free version. If you can’t get enough of the wood-fired dough, you can also order pizza bread ($6) and bunbinos ($6) which are baked bread rolls with garlic butter.
Kids are looked after with their own menu.
Stumpy’s is basically a take-away restaurant, although there are a couple of small tables if you want to eat your pizza fresh from the oven. And who could blame you? And for those of you who want to relax at home, Stumpy’s also delivers. So you can enjoy your wine at home and eat Stumpy’s pizza too!
