Sri Puteri

CLOSED – NOW TAN’S KITCHEN MALAYSIAN CUISINE. SEE REVIEW.

At first glance Queens Road does not look promising, but once you stop and take a closer look, you will find such delights as Sri Puteri.

This is has been a regular haunt for Malaysian food of those in the know for several years now, and new owner Kalai promises that she will keep all the favourite dishes on the menu. She knows them well – she is one of the cooks.

The lamb rendang was rich and satisfying, served with two vegetables and rice ($9.50) and the fried yellow noodles (char mee) was a dark golden plate of thick noodles tossed with small pieces of prawns, chicken, squid, egg, chives, bean sprouts and chinese sausage ($10.00). The chicken curry laska was the perfect warmer-upper on a cold winter’s day, thick with noodles, chunks of chicken on the bone and spicy coconut liquid ($10.00).

Also recommended are the fish head noodle soup ($14.00) and the nasi lemak ($12.00). Starters include pandan chicken wings ($7.00), lobak ($6.50), homemade Malaysian curry puffs ($3.80) and chappati rolls ($6.50).

The only dessert offering is ice kacang (ABC) which consists of shaved ice with kidney beans, palm seed, mixed jelly and sweet corn ($5.50) or with ice cream ($6.50). If it is available, opt for the homemade sponge cake flavoured with pandan leaves. It turns the cake a vibrant green colour, but the flavour is subtle and the cake light and moist.

You can also take your pick of many Malaysian coffee options ($3.00-$3.50, $.50 more with ice) or have a sweet cold drink of Longan ice.
