SetteBello Pizzeria Italiana
There is nothing like a good thin-crust wood-fired pizza. We had heard that SetteBello chef Francesco Acri took 1st place in the 2015 New Zealand Pizza Championship, so when the name of Settebello came up during our Metro Cheapeats judging, we knew that we just had to make a trip to West Auckland to check it out for ourselves.
We arrived early on a Saturday evening and were surprised to see that most of the tables were already taken (note that you can make reservations). Not to worry – the four of us got cosy around a small table until a larger table was available. The benefit of arriving before 6:30pm is that you can order the special pizza and beer combo for only $15. Such a deal!
We decided to order one of the pizzas on the specials list (Pizza Margherita), and then ordered two others from the regular menu: Capricciosa ($19.90) and Veggie ($18.90). We added greens to our meal with two sides of rocket salad ($6.50ea) along with two glasses of wine and a Peroni beer (beer included with the Margherita pizza special).
We watched as other tables got their pizzas – lots of families at this early hour (they have a kids menu) but also some couples. The decor is pleasant and simple with the traditional checked tablecloths on the tables. We could get a peek at the specially imported pizza oven with its fire blazing. There was a regular stream of clients coming to pick up pizzas for takeaways.
Fortunately we were able to switch to a larger table when our pizzas arrived. The Pizza Margherita was a great example of that simple classic: tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil. Settebello uses quality ingredients and the flavours of this simple dish came through beautifully. In fact, we decided later that this was our favourite pizza.
The Capricciosa was a combination of meats and vegetables: mozzarella, salami, ham, mushrooms, artichokes, Kalamata olives, bacon, capers. A good combination which came in second to the Margherita.
The Veggie pizza had a good variety of vegetables including mushrooms, artichokes, red onion, capsicum and artichokes along with mozzarella. The topping was generous but we still preferred the classic Margherita pizza as our first choice.
We can attest that the pizza crust in all three pizzas was excellent – the dough is proved for 20 hours and the pizzas are quickly cooked in an authentic Italian pizza oven fired with manuka wood at 450-500C.
We could have ordered calzone (folded pizza), gnocchi, or lasagna, but it is hard to go past the pizza.
The three pizzas were more than enough food for the four of us. In fact, we took enough leftover pizza home for another meal! This meant that we weren’t able to try the tiramisu so a return visit is in order.
If you live in West Auckland, then I am sure you will want to make Settebello a local favourite, and if you just love good pizza, then Settebello is worth the drive. Bookings recommended!
