As part of the spree of eating that was the Metro Cheap Eats judging, we checked out Punjabi Kitchen on Lincoln Road. This part of town is not known for nice sit-down restaurants so we were surprised at how pleasant it was inside. It’s relatively new, very clean and had a really relaxed ambience.
We ordered the Chicken 65 ($18), Special Fish Curry ($17.50) and Butter Chicken ($14.50) for the kids and were really pleased with what arrived at the table. Generous portions of well cooked food which was tasty and not just standard creamy curries with little or no actual substance.
Chicken 65 is one of my favourite dry dishes. I love its fried, slightly sour, spicy taste full of red chillies, ginger, garlic, cumin, mustard seeds, vinegar and all those good flavours. This was a pretty good version with a few veggies thrown in for interest and texture. The fish curry was full of flavour and you could taste the fenugreek, which gave it a lovely point of difference. Ordinarily I won’t touch a Butter Chicken but I did try some of the children’s and even went back for more. Not bad.
Punjabi Kitchen has all the standard favourites with some nice Manchurian extras and I’d be keen to go back and try some other dishes. I possibly wouldn’t cross town for it but am very happy to have it just down the road and can see it becoming a regular takeout option for us, especially with their $10 meal deals in the early week and for lunch.
