Cheap Eats - Petra Shawarma

Petra Shawarma

A delicious new find for you in Kingsland!  The charming husband and wife team of “Mo” and Dalal opened their simple restaurant/takeaway Petra Shawarma in the heart of the Kingsland shops and pubs just six weeks ago. Although they are Muslim the food is also described as Kashrut Food, which I understand is keeping Kosher in the Jewish food tradition.

The display cabinet looks much like many other kebab shops, but this is definitely one with a difference:  the food is homestyle Jordanian food made with love by Dalal.  The menu features a variety of Shawermas either in wraps ($11-$14.50) or on rice ($12.50-$15), homemade felafels ($5/7), a variety of main salads, vegetarian meals ($12.50)and even kid’s meals ($8). Nice to see Pita Fatoosh and Fava Bean salad being offered amongst the sides ($1.50-$10). Beverages available included non-alcoholic beer (plain and flavoured) and a yogurt/soda water drink ($4).

I decided to order the Chicken Onion Roll (Kusakhkhan $14), which was chicken pieces, onion and cashew nuts rolled in flatbread.  This came accompanied by yogurt and as a special treat, tastings of their hummus, baba ghanoush and Dalal’s homemade pickle mix.

The chicken, onion and cashews had all been cooked together until the cashews were well-toasted and spiced with sumac, then rolled in the flatbread.  I was surprised by the generous amount of cashews in the mixture.  It was very tasty although I could have used a little more salt to bring out the flavour.

The hummus and baba ghanoush were silky and good examples of their types.  The new treat for me was the pickle mixture which Dalal explained included green tomato, capsicum, carrot and cauliflower.  It was a lovely accompaniament to the roll which added a clean and crisp tasting dimension.  The pickle is available as a separate side on the menu.

I also ordered a serving of felafels (7 for $5) and the Chicken Shawerma on Rice ($12.50) for my daughter and I to have for dinner.  The felafels were crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, flavourful and not greasy.  My daughter cleaned up the Chicken Shawerma meal, after picking off the many toasted cashews on top (go figure!).  Dalal had kindly packed the hummus and salad that comes with the meal in separate containers so that they did not suffer from the reheating of the meal.

Dalal has plans to offer special foods/meals from time to time, and also warming soup in the winter.

Enjoy this new addition to the Kingsland food scene.
