Paasha Turkish Kitchen

This recent round of judging for Metro magazine’s Cheap Eats special has provided a few pleasant surprises, one of my favourites being the discovery of Paasha in New Lynn.

I really struggle to find good Turkish food in Auckland so was delighted to be asked to judge this small unassuming place I had heard so much about.

It would be pushing it to say that Paasha is ‘restaurant’ as such, probably more like a takeaway with a few seats ( three three person tables and one four). But whether you eat in or take out, you should just go there as the food is great.

We weren’t super hungry so we ordered two Zucchini and Feta Fritters ($3 each) and a Mixed Grill ($19) to share and it was more than enough. The fritters were incredibly light and must have included whipped egg whites somewhere in the process to get that cloudlike texture. They were slightly on the oily side but that didn’t detract from the great taste, nor stop us from devouring them in seconds.

The real joy at Paasha is the range of Shish Kebabs which sit in a refrigerated cabinet for you to view before they are cooked over an open flame to absolute perfection. The Mixed Grill contained a lamb, chicken and kofta Shish which were all so perfectly tender I can’t even describe it. The Turkish spices added enough flavour and excitement without overpowering the meat. We were in raptures. The meat came with rice and pita bread with tabouleh and a choice of sauce. I would highly recommend a tahini/ mint yoghurt combo with a smattering of chilli to complement the flavours of the meat. The whole plate was finished up with a sprinkling of sumac giving it tangy lift.

We finished the meal off with some house made baklava, fresh Turkish delight, a cup of Apple Tea and a Turkish Coffee. Perfect.

Paasha certainly won’t win any prizes for the prettiest place to eat but the friendly service and excellent food are enough reason to go back again and again. We will be.
