Mother’s Day Roast – Galbraith’s Ale House
By nature, many of our cheap eats fall into the Asian category, so we are always on the look out for a few western places to balance it all out (although we would happily eat Asian every day!)
To this end, Mother’s Day provided the perfect excuse for us to continue our search for a delicious roast lunch. And we found it!
Galbraith’s is an Auckland pub icon renowned for its in-house brewed ale and beer and extensive range of New Zealand boutique and imported beers. Plus of course a decent wine list! It is located in the former Grafton public library and has the ambience that comes from a real heritage interior.
Galbraith’s menu is also a step up from traditional pub grub. Hearty, yes, but also well-cooked and delicious. In fact, they take such pride in the quality of their ingredients that they even have their own small organic vegetable garden behind the pub. But I digress…
Galbraith’s offers roast meals throughout winter at the very attractive price of $19.90. Both pork and beef were on offer so we ordered one of each. We accompanied the meals with a glass of their own Munich-style beer ($8.50).
Fortunately we had booked a table on this busy Sunday, and we watched many groups of friends and family arrive while we waited the short time for our meals. The roast meals were beautifully presented on long rectangular plates with servings of roast potato, kumara and carrot, peas, slices of the roast meat and a light gravy. There was applesauce with the pork and horseradish sauce with the beef. Both meals were spectacularly capped off with a large, light Yorkshire pudding.
The beef had more flavour than the pork in my opinion and I would have liked a couple of more slices of meat, but both meals got our “roast meal seal of approval”. We also ordered a side dish of veggies for $6.90 which were perfectly cooked.
Not into roast meals? There are many other snack and meal options at Cheapeats prices: homemade meat and seafood pies ($16.50/$16.90); Stout beef burger ($19.90); BBQ chicken salad ($17.90); goat’s cheese toast with salad ($19.90); fish and chips ($19.90); bangers and mash ($20.90) and pulled pork open sandwich ($20.90). Starters and snacks range from $8.90 to $15.50 and the tempting dessert menu $9.90-$12.90. In fact, most of the items on the menu at Galbraith’s were inside or very close to the Cheapeats budget, with the exception of the steaks.
Winter is a wonderful time of year to enjoy the food and drink of Galbraith’s – get a table near the roaring fire, order a warming meal and a glass of homemade brew and say a word of thanks for this special Auckland pub.
