A recent visit to Melbourne presented me with a challenge – with all sorts of wonderful eating outlets, just where to go for lunch?  Fortunately, I came across Miznon, a casual restaurant serving modern Israeli food and my dilemma was solved.

came here because…
I was looking for a lunch venue with a difference in Melbourne.  Miznon is the Melbourne presence of an international collection by the same name, created by Israeli celebrity chef Eyal Shani. The Miznon ethos is to use “fresh and seasonally inspired ingredients to create a new kind of Mediterranean street food. Our vision is to take the flavour of each city and translate it into pita.”

Once I learnt about Miznon, and that it specialised in Israeli food, I was in!

The décor was…
Simple.  Miznon is almost a “hole-in-the-wall” size restaurant in Melbourne’s bustling Hardware Lane.  You walk down a few stairs to the kitchen to place your order.  There is some seating upstairs, and outside in the lane.

The food was…

My kind of food!  Think Ottolenghi meets pita and you kind of get the picture.  The menu is divided into vegetable dishes in pita, seafood in pita, red meat in pita and “Out of Pita”.  Out of Pita includes vegetable dishes and two meat “bag” dishes:  Bag of Golden Meat (brisket) and Sac de Coque (chicken).  There are also three sweet items on the menu.

I ordered the …
“Pita with a Bone” ($19) description intrigued me – lamb rib stew, tahini, pickles, onion and chili.    I also wanted a vegetable dish, and the roasted whole Baby Cauliflower Flower ($13) sounded delicious.  I loved the way that some of the kitchen shelves were filled with cauliflowers ready to be finished and served. These were some of the most expensive dishes on the menu, but hey, I was in Melbourne for only a day.

I also ordered a glass of their fruit cordial ($2).  A nice upgrade from plain water.  Miznon is licensed, but I had a busy afternoon ahead of me, so abstained.  I could have helped myself to some complimentary pita pieces and dips, but I wanted to save my appetite for lunch.

Once I placed my order, I found a spot in the seating upstairs, and watched the passing parade in the laneway.

I loved…
Both food choices.  My cauliflower arrived first, and I immediately dug in.  This had to be one of the softest and sweetest cooked cauliflowers that I have ever had.  I literally spooned it up and almost ate the whole thing – I wanted to save room for my lamb pita.

The lamb ribs sticking out of the pita make for a novel presentation of the Pita with a Bone.  I suspect that they are really placed there for effect, as they were very easy to remove. The lamb rib stew was as meltingly delicious as the cauliflower.  I loved the contrast of the sour pickle with the rich lamb.

If I could change one thing it would be…
