Mexico Food and Liquor

We welcomed the recommendation to give Mexico restaurant a try – something a little different from our usual Cheapeats repertoire.

Two of us visited Mexico for Friday lunch, and from the look of the restaurant, so had most of the office workers in Britomart! It was absolutely packed, and apparently it is like this most of the time. The rule here is, if you see an empty seat, grab it! Well, it is one way of meeting new people!

Mexican food has the reputation of being heavy and stodgy, but this is due to the misinterpretation of its cuisine. We were glad to see lots of interesting tastes on offer on the menu.

This is one of those small-plates types of restaurants, which fits perfectly into the Cheapeats budget and also makes it fun to try several different dishes.

We decided to try two soft shell tacos ($6 each): the adobo fish with watermelon and watercress slaw, and the achiote rubbed beef, with citrus cured eschalots. We also ordered the green bean, potato, watercress salad with roast garlic chimichurri ($10).

It didn’t take long for our food to arrive. The soft shell tacos were small – really 2-bite sized. We particularly liked the beef taco, with its richly flavoured meat. The salad was a reasonable size with a creamy chimicurri dressing which didn’t lend enough flavour to the dish. I personally do not like unsalted potatoes, and we both found the salad too bland, so we asked for salt. As the Masterchef judges say, “season your dish”!

This was most definitely a light lunch which suited us, and I would recommend that you order two dishes per person as a start, and go from there. The Specialties section of the menu includes their “not to be missed” fried chicken ($12), and the passing plates did look good. Other specialties included ceviche ($14), a chorizo, olive and blackbean empanada ($12), mussel and prawn vinaigrette with grilled corn bread ($14).

There are lots of drinks options on the menu – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. There is a good selection of Mexican beers, cocktails, sangria, margaritas and soft drinks and juices, but only a couple of wine options. BYO wine carries a $20 corkage.

My take on Mexico? A fun place to have a bite to eat and a drink. Even if you do not arrive with friends, chances are you will have made a few by the end of your visit!
