Cheap Eats - Lime Cafe

Lime Cafe

I just love it when I can share a real gem of a foodie find with everyone! The next time that you are in the mood for some really good Indian food: run, do not walk, to Lime Café.

It is tucked away on Station Road, just off the busy shopping street of Queen Street in the centre of Otahuhu.

I had first seen it when visiting another restaurant in the neighbourhood, but I had been attracted by its simple yet pleasant décor and by the fact that it had goat curry on the menu!  I resolved to revisit the area to try it out, and today was the day.

There is a simple takeaway menu but the blackboard menu gives you a better idea of the treats that you can enjoy:  hot and spicy Lahori masala chicken curry, spicy lemon chutney chicken, Madras style curries, Goa style curries, goat, lamb and duck curries!  How to choose?

Take my advice and place yourself in the capable hands of chef/owner Surendra.  He told me that he had a “chef’s special” that would take just a few minutes to prepare, so I ordered that.

I sat at one of the tables and was given my own jug of chilled water, and within 10 minutes I was served one of the most flavourful meals that I have enjoyed in a long time.  The chicken curry was so fresh tasting and the chicken so tender – I asked Chef Surendra his secret and he said that the chicken had marinated in tamarind overnight.  It came in its own bowl and was served with rice, flatbread, dhal and a potato curry which was presented on a beautiful plate.  All for the grand sum of $12!  It was a substantial meal but I could not bear to leave any of it behind.

Lime Café has simple but professional presentation and you can see through to the neat and tidy kitchen.  Surendra is working on achieving a gold “A” hygiene rating from the Council.  If this all sounds too good to be true, here is the secret:  Surendra is a former executive chef of the Sheraton Hotel!  He has worked in senior positions in the hospitality industry here and in Fiji, and is applying the same professionalism to his business in Otahuhu.

He would eventually like to be open later into the evening and may start with offering the occasional special evening meal event.  He has promised to let me know in advance whenever he does offer one, and I will advise all our Cheapeats Facebook friends, so if you haven’t “liked” Cheapeats yet, do it now so you don’t miss out!

By the way, I still haven’t tried the goat curry, so guess I’ll just have to make a return visit!
