Food on the go for RWC 2011

With just over a month to go till the Rugby World Cup, we thought we better give you the heads up on where to eat pre and post game. We thought we’d start with some good food to go, around Mt Eden and two of my favourites have to be Kebab Stop and The Mt Eden Village Fish Shop.

Our family would be lost without Kebab Stop. The smiling men who staff this busy takeaway serve us up the chicken on rice which has become our default rescue family meal.  A generous serving of chicken on a bed of rice topped with chilli sauce and yogurt, accompanied by salad and hummus – this has got to be good for you.  You could also opt for lamb or falafel on rice, or a combination.  Or you can have any of these rolled in a pita bread.

They make their own Greek salad, tabouleh and hummus which you can also order as sides.

Mt Eden Village Fish Shop is a regular award-winner in the fish and chips category with such magazines as Metro and Viva, NZ Herald.  This small shop located in busy Mt Eden Village has been a family-run fish shop for many years.  Today the emphasis is on the takeaways, homemade fish products and smoked fish.

I recently decided to try the fresh Fish Burger ($13). What a great decision!  The large, fresh bun arrived overflowing with a freshly cooked, crumbed fish fillet and salad.  Definitely a meal in itself.  I purchased an organic lemonade and sat in the shop, looking out the window, munching on the burger and watching the passing parade of shoppers.

I could have gone a healthier route and ordered the Fish Wrap ($12) but never mind.

The fish and chips are top quality here, always crispy and cooked in canola oil.  We prefer the crumbed fish option, but the beer batter is good too.  We also find that the half scoop size of chips is enough for us, but order the full scoop if you have hungry punters.

The Mt Eden Village Fish Shop makes homemade smoked fish pies (small $15.30 or large $28.30), smoked fishcakes ($7.70) and potato fritters ($2.20).  You can order the fishcakes and fritters as takeaways.  The fish pie just needs time in the oven to “heat and eat”.  You can always nibble on some of their custom-smoked fish (maybe with a cheeky glass of bubbles) while you are waiting at home for the fish pie to heat!

For those of you with children, the kids’ after-school special ($5.10) of two bite size pieces of fish and a handful of chips is the perfect snack before sports or other activities.

If you are entertaining during Rugby World Cup, then the fish shop can help you with its group menu (minimum of 10 people), which provides finger food style fish and chips. Call and order in advance.
