Since I stumbled on Kara Cafe in Milford – it has become my favourite breakfast spot on the Shore.

It has taken me a while to do a review on Kara Cafe because I didn’t want too many people to know about it. It’s selfish I know, but I didn’t want it to become another Little King overcrowded weekend brunch place. But they are just so good, I couldn’t keep the secret any longer!

Kara Cafe is located on the main road in Milford and it can be easy to miss with all the other cafes around. But make an effort to find it next to the barber shop, because we believe they have some of the best coffee in Auckland. Yes, you read that right.

Stefan and I have go to this cafe at least two times a month and we’ve never disliked a coffee or meal. Stefan usually gets one of their their signature hand drip coffees and I get their flat white with almond milk (trying to have less dairy in my life, sadly not by choice), or their iced Americano.

Their hand drip float on your tongue and have a delicate rich and sometimes floral taste. Like a good cup of green tea – layers of flavour and no bitterness. Their flat whites are the best that I’ve had in Auckland, hands down! Anyone who has ‘other’ milks in their coffee will know that a lot of places in Auckland usually steam the milk too hot and burn it and then your coffee curdles in your cup. Lovely stuff. Kara Cafe’s almond milk flat white is fluffy, soft, and has that slight hint of cherries, similar to an almond croissant. Heaven!

And their menu gives me hope for the Auckland brunch scene. We have tried their Grandma’s kimchi fritter, eggs benny with bacon, prawn dumpling soup, mushrooms on toast and poké bowl. All of which are delicious!

The fritter is a fantastic mix between western and Korean cuisine. With slight hints of fish sauce and kimchi the fritter  flavours mix well with the dollops of rich ricotta and raw vegetables twirled on top. It is a surprisingly filling meal while still being refreshing. The eggs benny come with half an English muffin and half a potato rosti, with a nice lemony zing from their hollandaise.

Their poké bowl is a good size with salmon, purple rice and a nice mix of veggies and salad. The quality reminds me of Poké Poké in Takapuna. The prawn dumpling soup is perfection! The broth is clear and flavourful, the dumplings are massive with a tasty prawn filling – it is the perfect dish when you want something comforting but you don’t want to take a nap after brunch. And the mushrooms on toast have a fantastic balsamic punch with a nice variety of different kinds of mushrooms and crunchy bread.

Kara Cafe is little and adorable with lots of plants, natural light and a nice small courtyard out the back. The staff are always very friendly and will answer any questions that you might have about the food or their special coffee choices. I hope to see you there soon!
