Go Go Daddy Thai Canteen
As fans of Blue Breeze Inn, Chop Chop Noodle and Woodpecker Hill we knew we would likely enjoy the new opening, Go Go Daddy Thai Canteen.
After our visit we think this latest addition to Mark Wallbank and Che Barrington’s empire will be a winner with Ponsonby Central patrons.
Go Go Daddy occupies the space near Neat Meat, originally taken up by Maldito Mendez and subsequently, Honeybear (a short lived venture by the same group). Fans of Moo Chow Chow were disappointed when that closed recently but Go Go Daddy is definitely a more than adequate consolation, and some of Ms Moos dishes live on here.
Thai Street food is the order of the day, so it would have been ridiculous not to order the Green Papaya Salad with tomato, peanuts and snake beans ($15). It was so refreshing with a really decent kick, a wonderful complement to other richer dishes.
We also ordered the Spicy Isan Wagyu steak salad ($20) which was fantastic, with all those wonderful fresh Thai flavours we love (lemongrass, chilli, coriander etc). The steak was perfectly cooked; not like in other Auckland establishments where I’ve struggled through ‘thai beef salads’ loaded with chewy meat drowned in sweet chilli sauce.
If I came again, I might not order the cured pork skewers. ($10). They were nice enough but a bit unremarkable compared to other dishes we ordered. The Duck Fried Rice ($18) loaded with garlic, coriander, chillies and fish sauce was all my comfort food dreams come true on a slightly drizzly Auckland day. The chilli wasn’t wildly hot so it was a nice, heavy, savoury addition to our order.
As with the other restaurants in the same group, the decor was fun and bright with staff and service to match. There’s even a local cat who comes by to say hello from time to time; bit cleaner than the ones I’ve seen in Thailand.
I’m keen to come back for the School Prawns (we love the ones at Woodpecker Hill) Soft Shell Crab and the Caramelised Pork Hock of Moo Chow Chow fame; and next time I’ll save room for the Lychee Sorbet too.
Go Go Daddy completes a set of three great options, all within Ponsonby Central, and will hopefully be more popular than what it’s just replaced. We’ll definitely be back.
