Glenfield Night Markets

I’m not a Shore girl so driving into Glenfield on a rainy Sunday night was like entering another world. Someone had suggested we check out the food at the night markets at the local Westfield but as we got deeper in to suburbia I did start to have my doubts about just how good they would be.

I was not only pleasantly surprised but fair bowled over. The Glenfield Night Markets are in the covered carpark of the shopping centre and they have a great energy, similar to a Malaysian hawker stall in Penang, or even our own Chinese lantern festival. It’s international street food at its best. There was everything from Hungarian pastries to Japanese Takoyaki, to Satay sticks, to tacos (with hot tortillas made on the spot) to Korean pancakes and everything in between.

The organisers of the market have combined the best of Auckland’s street food stalls and you feel like you’re at Pasifika, Diwali, Lantern and the International Cultural Festival all at once. We had fabulous tasting sushi ($1 piece), sumptuous tacos ($6 each) as well as some traditional Chinese sweet ($4) but to tell you the truth you’d find it pretty hard to encounter anything that even cost half of the standard Cheap Eats budget. This is cheap, delicious, authentic home-cooked international cuisine and we can’t wait to get back to try more of it.

Now you no longer have to wait for something major on the cultural calendar to experience ethnic food. This market is here to stay, every Sunday, same time, same place. Go soon. Next week in fact. No matter where you are, it’s worth the drive. And make sure you check out the American Brownies for dessert. I am still thinking about them…

I lived in Glenfield for years and I’ve been looking forward to a spare Sunday to come to these night markets. I’ve heard great things about this place. It looks like a great place to take $20 and eat until your eyes glaze over.

Do you know they are a permanent Sunday evening event?

We live on the Shore and have been a few times. My kids have decided the Korean Pancakes are a favourite and know exactly where the stall is. lol. It is on every Sunday and is recently new.. just around November/ December I remember seeing an opening ad for it.

$20 is plenty for 1 person. 🙂 Like the review says.. soooh cheap and just a nice friendly and busy environment about it.

I tried quail eggs for the first time there.. not bad at all 🙂

I have not been to this one but there is also one on at Westfield Pakuranga under the warehouse saturday nights 6-12pm. Same organiser and same deal I expect. Amazing find right here in Auckland, get down there.
But we need some reviews of the stalls. Not all cheapo Asian food is good, in fact some of it is very average at best. Come on peps lets start reviewing them!!!

We went to Pakuranga on Saturday night and it was amazing. My picks would have been the Wok flamed seafood and the Sri Lankan stall. What are your picks? The churros were pretty good too.
