Cheap Eats - Flaming Onion Gourmet Takeaways

Flaming Onion Gourmet Takeaways

Does the Flaming Onion serve up the best burgers in Auckland?  Based on my experience, I would answer with a resounding “yes”!

We normally visit restaurants, so it takes an exceptional takeaway to be reviewed for Cheapeats. The Flaming Onion definitely qualifies. I had heard such good things about their burgers that I decided to take my daughter to give it a go.

We picked a late afternoon on a Sunday for our visit.  Having heard that Friday nights can be frantically busy, I tried to pick a more quiet time.

The Flaming Onion is located on a side street in a little strip of shops in Northcote and it only took us 15 minutes to get there from Central Auckland.  The view back to the city from the shop is almost worth the drive alone!

The menu is all about burgers in various guises, and really, what else would you want to order?  There are several variations of beef, steak, chicken, fish and vegetarian burgers, plus fresh fish, hot dogs, fries, onion rings and various sides and sauces.  They also have a Burger of the Week, which you can check out in advance on their Facebook page.

Both my daughter and I opted for the Beef and Cheese burger ($10), which had “flame-grilled beef”, tasty cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion , relish, mustard and mayo.  We decided to make a meal of it, so to speak, and order the combo, with a burger, soft drink, and choice of agria handcut chips ($15.90 combo) or onion rings ($16.90 combo).

After a short wait of about 15 minutes, our order was ready for us to take home and our anticipation was well-rewarded.  The burgers were huge and the meat had been done to perfection, with just a touch of pink in the middle. The burgers are grilled over charcoal and the flavour really comes through.

The highlight for us was the onion rings.  These were the real deal, not the heavily coated processed rings that you find at many other burger bars.  The individual onion rings had been lightly coated in batter and were perfectly cooked.  The fries were also good and neither the onion rings nor the fries were at all greasy.

I have been advised that the homemade potato rosti is also good, so something to try next time.

The Flaming Onion promotes itself as a Real Gourmet Burger Bar and Takeways with freshly made food from an experienced chef.  Believe them!

Had a burger from there a few months ago and found it rather underwelming after reading rave reviews.

I believe that Big J’s Takeaways in Mt Wellington and Handmade Burgers in Kingsland are far superior.
