It’s probably pushing it slightly to call Fishsmith an eat-in situation but there are four chairs in the window and we did in fact eat there, so if the planets align timing-wise it’s possible.

This recently revamped chippie is so much more than your normal takeout joint. In fact, for the first time ever I was stumped as what to order, such was the choice. The menu, carefully constructed by owner Scott Brown, ex executive chef at the Sofitel is varied and fun, and we thoroughly enjoyed our fish tacos ($5), spicy chickpea bites ($4), slaw ($6) and fish, prawn and garlic chive dumplings ($4). The kids were also thrilled with their Fish and Chips ($6.5) and Calamari and Chips ($6.5).

We’re short on time this week so I won’t go into extensive detail on every menu item but I will say the kids’ fish was fresh and perfectly battered with a light coating that miraculously didn’t leave the dreaded oily aftertaste in your mouth (hands down the best kids meal anywhere in town). The dumplings were more like wontons but with a seafood filling. The fish tacos were simple but super tasty with very fresh fish and slaw – very California. The chips were hand cut and twice-cooked but a touch on the salty side (easily fixed by request I’m sure), the slaw was fresh with a lively dressing; and the chickpea bites were a fun and varied menu addition – not particularly spicy but beautifully flavoured and tasty.

I won’t waste anymore space waxing lyrical. I’ll just say if you’ve become disillusioned with trying to find good Fish and Chips in Auckland, Fishsmith will restore your faith. And then some.
