Father’s Day Cheapeats

  • El Sizzling Lomito
  • Brothers Juke Joint
  • Mr Zhous
  • Happy Boy

Treat Dad on his special day.  Here are our suggestions to enjoy a Cheapeats Father’s Day, without breaking the budget.

With Fathers’ Day coming up this weekend we asked some Dads where they’d most like to go. The responses varied enormously from ribs and brisket at Brother’s Juke Joint and giant man-sized sandwiches at El Sizzling Lomito  to dumplings at Mr Zhou’s and Bao Burgers at Happy Boy.

Brother’s Juke Joint is perfect for a family group of any age.  This truly family-friendly restaurant and boutique brewery has everything from toys and a sandpit for the little ones through to authentic smoked meats and beer to appeal to the boutique beer loving Dads. Be sure to try the baked beans with smoked meat ends.  Yum! See full review here.

Continuing on our meat theme, El Sizzling Lomito has giant man-sized “sandwiches” for the Dad with a big appetite.   The Steak Lomito is a meal in itself. See full review here.

Everyone loves dumplings and everyone loves the dumplings at Mr Zhou’s.  After setting up in West Auckland, Mr Zhou has now opened a second restaurant in Mt Eden, but we like the West Auckland location better.  Get the pork and fennel or pork and cabbage dumplings.  You can get them steamed if you like, but I think fried is the way to go.  Take some frozen dumplings home with you to cook and enjoy at your leisure.  See our full review here.

What list would be complete without our pick for burgers?  Head to Royal Oak and enjoy the Asian/burger fusion menu and cool vibe decor at the new Happy Boy or for something slightly more traditional try Auckland favourite Burger Burger. We recommend the Bao Burgers at Happy Boy.  Get there early – this place is very popular!  See our previously published full review.
