Everybody’s – Bar Snacks

Cheapeats colleague Alexia, food journalist Anna King Shahab and I went out recently to check out good places to have a drink and a bite to eat.

We loved our finds at both Everybody’s and at Orleans and just have to share them with you. Perfect for a casual evening with a friend or a bite before a show.  Alexia has now visited Orleans several times, so watch for her review of it in coming weeks.

Everybody’s is tucked away with entrances off both Queen Street or Imperial Lane, but the hunt is worth it. Walk down Fort Lane (off Fort Street), through Imperial Lane and walk up a flight of stairs or take the elevator. Everybody’s unfolds before you as a wonderful surprise – sit outside in the courtyard on inside on one of two levels. There is lots of choice.

We visited during Happy Hour, 5pm-7pm, and discovered that we could have a glass of decent house wine or beer for only $5. We were off to a good start! The nibbles menu had us drooling but it didn’t take us long to zero in on the Triple-cooked Duck Fat Chips ($10)which we all know makes the best roasted/fried potatoes. We added an order of the Tokyo Chicken ($15) and the Tempura Artichoke ($14). The charred eggplant with harissa and lavash ($12) also spoke to us but we opted for the artichokes instead. No ordinary bar menu this! It is no wonder as the Executive Chef is James Pask who has worked at such esteemed restaurants as Clooney.

The fries were everything and more that we had hoped for. Large golden fries with a satisfying crunch – and very little greasiness. The tempura artichokes were a good slightly tart counterpoint to the fries. The artichokes were cut into pieces with the stems intact, coated and then fried and served with a preserved lemon hollandaise sauce. Perfect finger food.

The chicken was probably not the easiest to eat as finger food but was absolutely delicious.  Tender pieces of chicken (we think thigh meat) with a light coating and then served with spring onions and ginger and a miso sauce.

We enjoyed the food so much that we made short work of it all.  Our food choices combined to make a rather rich meal, but it was perfect if you were having a couple of drinks.

Everybody’s also has a full lunch and dinner menu and for dinner they offer small plates ($15-$19), meals ($26-$30) and shared dishes ($34-$64).

Everybody’s was a wonderful discovery for us – discover it for yourself soon!
