Eden Noodles Cafe Albany
The famous Eden Noodles Cafe has recently opened a second location in Albany. They have a slightly smaller menu but if you love the food at Eden Noodles Cafe on Dominion Road as much as us, than you don’t need to read anymore. They are just as amazing on the Shore!
For those who have never had the opportunity, Eden Noodles Cafe is the place to go for spicy Sichuan noodles and dumplings in Auckland. I would highly recommend the Albany location over the Dominion Road spot, mostly because you’re more likely to get a seat. When we heard about the Shore opening we decided to go the very next day for dinner.
We figured a Monday night would have a smaller queue, but found that they aren’t open on Mondays. So we decided to go after seeing a movie that Saturday. We rushed over starving for noodles. We arrived at 8:35pm. They close at 8:30 pm.
After crying and taking a photo of their opening hours, we arrived the following Tuesday night determined and hungry. The smell of chillies, dough and stewed meat greeted us in the parking lot. The restaurant is small but it has 6 large tables each fitting about 8 people, and a few seats at the bar. I would not recommend coming with a large group, four is cutting it close.
Ordering was a bit chaotic but we successfully ordered: Chinese pita bread with mixed turnip in spicy sauce ($4.5), medium dan dan handmade noodles in spicy soup with crispy pork mince ($8.5) and a medium chopped noodles (extra $2) with beef mince and long beans ($9.5). We sat down at a table, next to a quite lovely man who ordered some delicious looking dishes.
To Stefan’s horror, I leaned over and asked about his meal. He said he always orders the dumplings in spicy and sour soup and the cold noodles with shredded chicken. He believes their dish of cold handmade noodles with chicken is the best, it reminds him of home. It looked amazing and perfect for a hot summer day.
All our food came out in less than 10 minutes and it was everything that we had dreamed of. The pita with turnip in spicy sauce was cold but much spicier than I thought! I could only have a few bites before my mouth felt like it was on icy fire.
The two noodle dishes were both very different and wonderful in their own ways. I preferred the chopped noodles, I like the billowy texture but Stefan loved the handmade noodles for the dan dan, because they added the right amount of chew texture with the crispy pork mince. We ended the night full, satisfied and with tingling mouths.
