When Anna King Shahab (features editor of Taste magazine, Metro Judge and author of blog Eats By Anna) recommends somewhere to eat, I listen. This lady knows her food. She said Delicious Dishes on Dominion Road had become a favourite for her family) so one night my husband and I decided to check it out.
We weren’t disappointed in the food but the service the night we went was a bit slow. I think we may have slipped under the radar a bit as people who came after us got served before. I would be willing to try it again to see if that was the case.
All the dishes bar three are either $7, $8 or $9 and the food is Northern Chinese. We ordered the Spicy Salted Squid, Caixin with Garlic Sauce and the Sautéed Chicken cubes with Chilli and Peanuts. We inhaled the squid as it was so delicious – fried perfectly so as to ensure inner tenderness and outside crispiness. It was salted as promised with a hint of chilli powder giving it the perfect amount of salt and warmth. It was fried with celery, carrot and garlic all cooked immaculately (not too soggy and still with a lot of their original brightness of colour).
The chicken was also excellent. Very tender cubes stir-fried in a full flavoured chilli-based sauce (not super spicy but not mild either) with garlic shoots and carrots. The peanuts were an excellent contrast of texture. My husband prefers another version of this down the road from this place, with a bigger hit of vinegar but I enjoyed this rendition.
The Caixin in garlic sauce was a fairly standard Chinese greens in garlic glaze but the serving was big and it was well executed, again that perfect line between crunchy and cooked.
The interior is pleasant and clean and while it won’t win any interior awards, it was well above the standard of many of the Cheap Eats we’ve dined in!
Aside from the slow service I am dying to get back here. Truly excellent value, fresh tasty food. Worth waiting a while for but not as long as we did so I’m interested to see if it was a kitchen muck-up or standard wait time.
