Crust Gourmet Pizza Bar

Crust is a relatively new addition to the Auckland (and Hamilton) pizza scene. It is a member of a company based in Australia and claims to offer”gourmet” pizzas.  We were keen to find something different  – and hopefully better – than the more well-known pizza delivery companies, so we headed to the top of Parnell Road to pay them a visit.

We were presented with a wide variety of pizza choices:  traditional, meat, chicken, seafood, vegetarian and “upper crust” gourmet pizzas in small and large sizes.  There were also “healthier choice” pizzas available in small size only.

We had several people to feed and decided to try a large Meatball pizza ($24) and a large Vegetarian Supreme pizza ($24).  There is no choice of crusts (other than gluten-free) – all the pizzas are on a thin base.

I am a pizza traditionalist and the Meatball pizza was my favourite:  homemade Italian meatballs, roasted capsicum, spanish onions, sundried tomatoes, bacon and bocconcini on a tomato base.  Hearty and satisfying.

In an effort to eat our 5+ vegetables, we ordered the Vegetarian Supreme which came with grilled eggplant, marinated artichokes, baby spinach, roasted capsicum, mushrooms, sundried tomates and bocconcini on a tomato base.  It was topped with a green sauce which was supposedly pesto aioli. The pizza itself was fine, but the flavour of the pesto aioli eluded me, and I would give the topping a miss.

The two large pizzas were more than enough to feed our group of four, and the small pizzas would satisfy feed one hungry person.

If you want to “push the boat out” and try the Upper Crust pizzas ($26), the flavours include Moroccan Lamb, Sausage Duo, Wagyu Prawn, Peking Duck, Five Spice Pork Belly and White Prosciutto.

The gourmet menu extends to calzones ($12), salads ($7-$10.50) and desserts ($6-$9.50).  We bought the frozen tiramisu dessert to eat at home and it disappeared so quickly that I did not manage to get a taste.  To my surprise the label states that the tiramisu is made in Italy – quite a journey!  Or you could try the Rocky Road calzone if calories were no object.

Crust offers takeaway or eat-in options and delivers in nearby neighbourhoods. It’s pizzas are not in the realm of the top artisan hand-made wood-fired pizza places, but it does offer a step-up from the “same old, same old” pizza companies.
