Crazy Noodle – Revisited

A visit to Crazy Noodle at its new location, June, 2015:

Our first visit to Crazy Noodle was four years ago in a location tucked off Kent Street in Newmarket.  The building was not unlike a garage and the decor was plain to say the least.  However, it had a bustling trade of  clients.  When the Kent Street stables and historic buildings were renovated, Crazy Noodle moved on, and is now trading on Carlton Gore Road.

The decor of Crazy Noodle is still simple although there is a nod to style with retro posters featuring China during its time under Chairman Mao.

Not sure why the use of the word “Crazy” in its name, but “Noodle” is definitely apt.  This is the place to come if you have a big appetite and are looking for a feast of rice or noodles.

It was lunchtime so we ordered two dishes – the flat rice noodles with pieces of pork ($12) and the chicken and eggplant in salty fish sauce served on rice ($11.50).  This dish is also available as a large dish ($18) but the helpful server suggested that the smaller option on rice would be enough.  And she was right!

We were given two large plastic glasses of hot tea on arrival and we sipped this strangely bland beverage as we waited for our food.  There was a good crowd of office workers having lunch and I watched as plates piled with rice or noodle dishes came out from the kitchen.

Our turn soon came – our rice noodles with pork pieces was a very generous serving.  The pork pieces were really incidental  – this dish is all about the lovely smooth texture of the fresh rice noodles. There were a few bean sprouts for texture mixed through along with the pieces of meat, but the noodles were the star.  Definitely comfort food territory.

The chicken dish on the other hand was all about the eggplant. Meltingly tender and literally falling apart, the eggplant was cooked in a savoury sauce that was a flavour hit that contrasted well with the noodle dish. The chicken pieces seemed to disappear in the dish, but we didn’t mind. We polished this dish up (just) and I took the remains of the noodles home in a takeaway container.

Crazy Noodle is about simple, good Chinese cooking.  There are nibbles and Hong Kong style toast dishes, main meals, noodle soups, as well as rice and noodle stir-fries,  baked rice dishes and clay-pot rice dishes. I can guarantee you will not leave hungry!
