Cheap Eats Bar Food: Underpass
Just a quick post this week rather than an in-depth review. Last night we went to the opening of Underpass, a new bar down the bottom of town, and it struck me that it’s not a bad place for some drinks and better-than-average bar food to go with it.
On the drinks front they had some pretty great craft brews on tap from Liberty, Panhead and Good George and the food menu was lively and fun. Okay it wasn’t Ethiopian enjera, South Indian Thali or anything wildly exotic, but everything we ate was fresh, well cooked and totally enjoyable. Perfect accompaniments to a nice cold beer or glass of wine after work.
The menu will change regularly but it’s street food styles and last night we tried the fish sliders (think everything that is great about a dirty old fillet o’ fish but replace the nasty processed patty with fresh, well cooked fish and good sauce) chicken satay (tender chicken with just the right amount of peanut sauce to let the chicken still shine through) Veggie soft tacos (bright, light and fresh – I personally needed a tiny bit more kick but that is a preference) and mini meatballs in a luscious full, lightly spiced sauce.
Underpass are committed to keeping all these snacks under $10 each and I think if you went with a group and ordered a couple of each you’d be pretty happy with your mix. Beats the hell out of the curly fries/nachos/salt n pepper squid bar food that graces most drinking holes in Auckland. It’s perhaps not the place for a first date but if you want good booze and snacks, which aren’t all deep fried and battered, check it out.
