The Burger Project, Sydney

I have always wanted to eat at a restaurant owned by Australian celebrity chef Neil Perry and finally, I have – on a Cheapeats budget!

On my visit to Sydney to check out the Vivid light festival, I was keen to find some new food discoveries on the waterfront/Circular Quay area, preferably discoveries that would not break the bank.

I was thrilled to discover the new Gateway food complex (more about this in another post)  and one of Neil Perry’s new The Burger Project restaurants located on the first floor.

Neil Perry takes his food seriously, and this applies to The Burger Project:  “Fast Food Slow Food Values”.  First the meat – organic, grass fed beef from Tasmania.  The meat is delivered to the restaurants in large “sides” that are carved up and then minced fresh on-site. You can watch this action through a window into the kitchen.  The chicken is Lilydale free range.

You can choose between beef, chicken and mushroom burgers, but beef is king here.  I decided to splurge and order the Extreme burger ($14.90), which includes a crumbed, confit mushroom in the garnishes. Of course I also ordered a small side of fries ($3.90) which you can have with Chipotle chilli salt or Sichuan pepper salt if you so desire.

Soft serve ice cream is on offer plus shakes and sodas and also wine, beer and cider.

The restaurant operates like most fast food joints.  You place your order, get a “buzzer” and then await your food.  The seating area in the Gateway location is large and has windows overlooking the busy-ness of pedestrians and traffic on Circular Quay.

I settled in to enjoy my burger – which was perfectly cooked and tasted very good. However, the flavour of the confit mushroom didn’t really stand out in this burger, so I would probably just have a standard burger next time.  The fries were crisp and the small serving was more than enough for me.

There are three The Burger Project locations in Sydney, so if you are in the Sydney CBD and craving a burger, then you are not far away from an outlet.  Perhaps The Burger Project is not worth crossing town for, but it is great to have a burger that tastes good and is almost good for you, too!
