It’s not often I find an Indian place that really takes my fancy, but recently on a story for the Herald, I met Darryl Fernandes and his Bombay Chinese in Three Kings and found something a cut above the regular offerings.  It’s only just a restaurant (three or four tables) but would make great takeout when you’re looking for something with real, bold flavour. You could eat in but I’d only do it if you’re grabbing a quick bite – it’s pretty small.

The style of food is Bombay Chinese so it’s pretty aptly named. Darryl explains the style originates from the Hakka people who immigrated from China and had to alter their cuisine to suit the local market (ie make it spicier for Indian tastes). The result is outstanding. I tried the Hakka Noodles ($13) – big fat round noodles with chicken, veggies and a distinct Indian spice. It was super tasty and a nice multi-layered flavour profile with the Indian spices making themselves known towards the end of each initially Chinese bite.

But what blew my mind was my dining partner’s  Chicken 65 ($15) – great tender spicy chicken loaded with ginger, garlic, lemon, cayenne pepper mustard and vinegar. It’s one of those dishes that you think about for days after and try and find excuses to get back and try it again. I am also dreaming about all the other things I could try. Darryl is a larger-than-life character with a talent for flavour and his menu has all kinds of dishes (not just indian/ chinese). My bet is that his Goan Prawn Curry is pretty good too.

    I’ve never heard of this kind of cuisine. Very cool. Hopefully they do well and with the popularity of Chinese cuisine and Indian cuisine in this country, I think this is an easy new cuisine to ease into the kiwi palate.

    simply put can a wheelcahir user get into this building? If so it should be deemed accessible regardless of the space – or would you be suggesting that huge and obese people should not enter this restuarant because of space restrictions too?!

    Serious food being prepared right before your very eyes….the aroma was tantalizing and made my tummy rumble..just wanted to open the box and eat right on the counter…amazing taste couples with the right texture and aroma…LOVE IT…must try for foodie addicts

    Yum, eating chicken 65 right now! Think sweet and sour chicken with bold indian flavours. Go easy when asked how spicy.

    Just to update everyone… My main branch has now shifted to 368 Queen Street, opp town hall,
    It’s a spanking new food court with 94 seating.
    Soon to be licensed. Latest offering is the Death Valley chicken and suicide bomber chicken.
    Must try .
