Bombay Blues - Cheap Eats - Auckland

Bombay Blues

I headed out to Bombay Blues in St John’s during the judging process for the recent Metro Cheapeats awards. Located in one of those anonymous strip malls on the Glen Innes side of St John’s, I was initially apprehensive about the quality of the food that I would find there.

I had referred to their menu on-line and placed my order over the telephone so just needed to pick up my food. Just as well that I had not planned to eat in – on this particular cold winter’s evening the front door was open so that the restaurant was decidedly chilly. However the counter staff gave me a warm welcome and my order was ready for me to pick up. The kitchen area looked clean and tidy with the cooks waiting for the dinner rush of orders to come in.

We ordered two of our favourite Indian dishes (Butter Chicken $13 and Lamb Saagwala $14) plus a specialty of the house: Goan Fish Curry ($16.50). The previous year’s Metro judge had praised this dish so I was keen to try it. We also ordered naan bread. Bombay Blues has a tandoor oven, so the bread was the real deal.  In fact, I would suggest trying any dish prepared in the oven – it really imparts a special authentic flavour.

Our daughter has become somewhat of a Butter Chicken expert and gave this version her thumbs-up: reasonably sized pieces of chicken in a creamy tomato sauce. The Lamb Saagwala is my husband’s “go to” Indian dish and he was likewise happy with the lamb pieces in a brilliant green spinach sauce.

I was glad that I tried the Goan Fish Curry. This dish has a South Indian influence and the generous serving of fish in the coconut and spice sauce had the lovely sweet-sour touch of tamarind.

Would I cross town again to have food from Bombay Blues? Probably not – there are other restaurants closer to my home that make food of a similar standard. But if I lived in the St John’s /Glen Innes area I would be happy to make Bombay Blues one of my “locals”. Netball Moms take note – it is also reasonably close to the AMI Netball complex, so it makes a handy place to stop for food before or after an evening game.

We live near this place and go there once a week! The food is amazing and they know us by name now. We’ve had friends over who love their Indian food and they agreed that this is one of the best Indian takeaways in Auckland!
