Bird on a Wire

Bird on a Wire is the answer to those times when we want homestyle food but don’t have time to cook.

Located just down from KFC on Ponsonby Road, Bird on a Wire offers the polar opposite of the franchise’s menu: think free range rotisserie chicken, homestyle salads, gourmet sandwiches, burgers, artisan bakery baguettes from Wild Wheat and fresh juices.  The owners are all locals who are keen foodies or who have worked previously in the hospitality industry, and they take pride on offering healthy real food takeaways.

I visited Bird on a Wire on a night when I was running late and wanted a healthy family meal.  There are chicken “feeds” or meals available for one person ($15) through to a family feed ($75).  I opted for a “big bird” meal ($44) of a whole chicken, large salad and baguette with an extra large salad ($16 – we love our veges and a small pottle of gravy $2).  I was able to select the bird that I wanted and opted for a lettuce, pumpkin and feta salad along with the classic shredded carrot and beetroot salad.  There was also a large coleslaw salad.  The salad offerings are changed regularly, so check their Facebook page for this week’s line up.

The meal was quickly bagged for me to take home.  Bird on a Wire does have several tables available to eat in, including a couple of tables under cover of a plastic awning on the footpath.

The chicken was as I expected – nicely cooked and moist, not dry. The salads were nice but were a little ho-hum for my tastebuds. Rather too much lettuce and not enough pumpkin and feta in one salad while the shredded carrot and beetroot was just that – both salads could have used a more interesting dressing.  However, they would probably appeal to all family members so that is probably the main thing. The baguette from Wild Wheat was fresh and moreish, especially good dunked into the gravy!

I would like to try the sandwiches on the menu  – both the Banh Mi ($13)and the Korean BBQ chicken roll ($10) sound delicious, and hopefully with that flavour burst that I look for.

Bird on a Wire is worth a visit if you are in the neighbourhood  and a great option when you don’t have time to cook but don’t want to eat fast food.
