Betsia Kebabs and Chargrilled Burgers

Betsia Kebabs

Kebabs are simple meals but it’s amazing how easy it is to go wrong with them. I am a big fan of Middle Eastern food but have suffered many a kebab, salad or rice meal with brownish lettuce, dry meat and average flavours. I am pleased to report that none of the above occurred when we visited Betsia Kebab last weekend.

One of the other judges for the Metro Top 100 Cheap Eats had been impressed (and this man knows food) so we trotted off to check it out. While it’s not a place to go for atmosphere, the service was super-friendly and we have to concur that the food was very good.

I had a Chicken Souvlaki Salad ($12) and my husband had a Lamb Souvlaki Kebab ($11) and there was nothing left of  either of them in a fairly short space of time (whether that says more about us or the food, I’m  not sure). My salad was big with  fresh crisp lettuce, carrot, tomato, onion cucumber, tangy vinaigrette  and a good tabouleh on top. It had beautifully creamy home-made hummus on the side. I asked for mine mild to medium and the spice level was perfect for me.

I asked for a recommendation on sauces and the lovely man behind the counter said with the already spicy souvlaki chicken I would be best with a yoghurt garlic and barbecue sauce. He was bang on and the combination of the creamy yoghurt, spicy chicken and tangy barbecue sauce was a winner. His presentation was pretty fabulous for a $12 salad too.

My husband’s meal was also great and although my chicken was good I would say his lamb was even more tender. The pita wrap was soft and fresh, the salad juicy and the sauces in good harmony too.

It’s not the place for a romantic evening out, in fact it’s kind of a takeaway joint with seats really. But the vibe is nice and the people friendly and it’s a great place to grab a bite. They also had a good looking burger menu which I’d be keen to go back and check out. If you’re a sweet tooth, make sure you try the Turkish Delight ($4 for 5 pieces) after your meal too.
