As usual it was a fast and furious few weeks of judging for Metro’s Cheap Eats and we discovered a few great spots we hadn’t visited before.

One of these was Achos in St Kevin’s Arcade, a funky little Japanese joint with its chairs in the centre of this beautiful light-filled shared eatery space

We were keen for a quick bite before a movie so the format of shared plates really appealed. We ordered Lotus Root chips ($5) Edamame ($5) Takoyaki ($7) a Prawn and a Pork Katsu Bun ($7 each), Japanese Style Octopus Ceviche ($7) and Japanese Fried Chicken ($7).

The Ceviche was sublime with big flavours and crazily tender flesh (always a concern when ordering octopus – I’ve had a lot of rubbery chopped up tentacles in my time). It was my pick of the night and I’d go back for it alone. The Lotus Root chips were as moreish as any root vege deep fried and salted, but it’s always nice to take a break from potatoes and kumara on that front. The Edamame was pretty much the same as anywhere I’ve ever visited.

The buns were the steamed Bao variety that’s currently so popular around town and were great and filling, combining crispy deep-fried bread crumbed pork or prawn with that irresistible combination of Japanese mayo lettuce and BBQ sauce.

The Japanese Fried Chicken was the only let down of the night. When I’ve ordered Karaage in other places, it’s always come out crisp and crunchy on the outside, but this fell a bit short on the texture front. I found it a bit soggy and underwhelming in general.

Despite that, I’d definitely come back again. This is fun food in a great space with a wonderful view of the Skytower out the window. It’s cheap and cheerful and the owners and staff are super friendly and helpful. Its vibe is a bit different to other Japanese places and it draws you back in for more. We will return.
